# Body of Christ ## Catechism of the Catholic Church The human body which the Son of God assumed through his conception in the womb of Mary and which is now glorified in heaven ([[1.2.2.3.p1j#^ccc-467|467]], [[1.2.2.3.p1j#^ccc-476|476]], [[1.2.2.5.p1s#^ccc-645|645]]). (2) This same Body and Blood, together with the soul and divinity, of our Lord Jesus Christ are sacramentally present in the Eucharist under the appearances of bread and wine ([[2.2.1.3.p41#^ccc-1374|1374]]). (3) The Church is called the (mystical) Body of Christ because of the intimate communion which Jesus shares with his disciples; the metaphor of a body, whose head is Christ and whose members are the faithful, provides an image which keeps in focus both the unity and the diversity of the Church ([[1.2.3.9.p28#^ccc-787|787]], [[1.2.3.9.p28#^ccc-790|790]], [[2.2.1.3.p42#^ccc-1396|1396]]). ## Ignatius Catholic Study Bible **Body** Aspect of man, sometimes referred to in association with "the flesh", that is inclined to sin: [[romans-06#^romans-06-6|Rom 6:6]]; [[romans-07#^romans-07-24|7:24]]; [[romans-08#^romans-08-13|8:13]] Church in her union with Christ is described in bodily terms: [[romans-12#^romans-12-4|Rom 12:4-5]]; [[1-corinthians-12#^1-corinthians-12-12|1 Cor 12:12-27]]; [[ephesians-01#^ephesians-01-22|Eph 1:22-23]]; [[ephesians-02#^ephesians-02-16|2:16]]; [[ephesians-04#^ephesians-04-4|4:4, 12, 15-16]]; [[ephesians-05#^ephesians-05-23|5:23, 30]]; [[colossians-01#^colossians-01-18|Col 1:18]]; [[colossians-02#^colossians-02-19|2:19]]; [[colossians-03#^colossians-03-15|3:15]] Eucharistic term, used with the term "blood", for the reality of Jesus' embodied presence in the Eucharist: [[matthew-26#^matthew-26-26|Mt 26:26-29]]; [[mark-14#^mark-14-22|Mk 14:22-25]]; [[luke-22#^luke-22-19|Lk 22:19-20]]; [[1-corinthians-11#^1-corinthians-11-23|1 Cor 11:23-26]] Mode of Jesus' transformed life after his resurrection from the dead: [[matthew-28#^matthew-28-6|Mt 28:6, 9]]; [[mark-16#^mark-16-6|Mk 16:6, 12]]; [[luke-24#^luke-24-39|Lk 24:39]]; [[john-20#^john-20-25|Jn 20:25, 27]] Physical aspect of man in contrast to his spiritual aspect (soul; spirit): [[matthew-10#^matthew-10-28|Mt 10:28]]; [[luke-12#^luke-12-4|Lk 12:4-5]]; [[luke-09#^luke-09-40|9:40]]; [[1-corinthians-07#^1-corinthians-07-34|1 Cor 7:34]]; [[2-corinthians-02#^2-corinthians-02-12|2 Cor 2:12, 2-3]]; [[2-corinthians-05#^2-corinthians-05-6|5:6-10]]; [[1-thessalonians-05#^1-thessalonians-05-23|1 Thess 5:23]]; [[james-02#^james-02-26|Jas 2:26]]; [[2-peter-01#^2-peter-01-13|2 Pet 1:13-14]] Physical aspect of the human being: [[matthew-06#^matthew-06-25|Mt 6:25]]; [[matthew-14#^matthew-14-12|14:12]]; [[matthew-24#^matthew-24-28|24:28]]; [[matthew-26#^matthew-26-12|26:12]]; [[matthew-27#^matthew-27-58|27:58-59]]; [[mark-05#^mark-05-29|Mk 5:29]]; [[john-02#^john-02-21|Jn 2:21]]; [[acts-of-the-apostles-09#^acts-of-the-apostles-09-40|Acts 9:40]]; [[hebrews-10#^hebrews-10-5|Heb 10:5, 10]]; [[1-peter-02#^1-peter-02-24|1 Pet 2:24]]; Jude 9 Temple of the Holy Spirit: [[1-corinthians-06#^1-corinthians-06-19|1 Cor 6:19]] Subject of resurrection: [[1-corinthians-15#^1-corinthians-15-44|1 Cor 15:44]]; [[philippians-03#^philippians-03-21|Phil 3:21]] Whole human person referred to in terms of his bodily aspect: [[matthew-06#^matthew-06-22|Mt 6:22-23]]; [[luke-11#^luke-11-34|Lk 11:34, 36]]; [[james-03#^james-03-2|Jas 3:2, 6]] *See also* [[church]]; [[eucharist]]; [[flesh]]; [[resurrection-of-the-dead|Resurrection]]; [[soul]]; [[spirit]] ### Sources [[index-of-doctrines|Index of Doctrines]]
