# Christ ## Catechism of the Catholic Church From the Greek translation of the Hebrew _Messiah_, which means "anointed." It became the name proper to Jesus because he accomplished perfectly the divine mission of priest, prophet, and King, signified by his anointing as Messiah, "Christ" ([[1.2.2.2.p1f|ccc-436]]). _See_ [[jesus-christ|Jesus Christ]]; Messiah; Anointing. ## Ignatius Catholic Study Bible *Christ* ([[mark-14#^mark-14-61|Mk 14:61]]) – *Christos* (Gk.): "the Anointed One". It translates the Hebrew word for "Messiah". Since kings ([[2-samuel-02#^2-samuel-02-4|2 Sam 2:4]]; [[1-kings-01#^1-kings-01-34|1 Kings 1:34]]), prophets ([[psalm-105#^psalm-105-15|Ps 105:15]]), and priests ([[exodus-29#^exodus-29-7|Ex 29:7]]; [[leviticus-08#^leviticus-08-12|Lev 8:12]]) were anointed with oil for their respective ministries, it was expected that the Messiah would take all these ministries upon himself as a covenant representative anointed by the Spirit ([[isaiah-61#^isaiah-61-1|Is 61:1]]). Most linked the Messiah with an ideal king from the line of David ([[mark-12#^mark-12-35|Mk 12:35]]). He would be born in David's hometown of Bethlehem ([[micah-05#^micah-05-2|Mic 5:2]]), rule over the restored Davidic kingdom ([[isaiah-09#^isaiah-09-7|Is 9:7]]; [[mark-11#^mark-11-10|Mk 11:10]]), and enjoy a unique relationship with God as his son ([[2-samuel-07#^2-samuel-07-14|2 Sam 7:14]]). The OT also hinted that the Messiah would suffer the scorn and rejection of his enemies ([[psalm-02#^psalm-02-2|Ps 2:2]]; [[psalm-89#^psalm-89-38|89:38-51]]; ; [[daniel-09#^daniel-09-26|Dan 9:26]]). All of this is fulfilled in Jesus. Anointed by the Holy Spirit ([[acts-of-the-apostles-10#^acts-of-the-apostles-10-38|Acts 10:38]]), he is the Son of God ([[mark-01#^mark-01-1|Mk 1:1]]; [[john-01#^john-01-49|Jn 1:49]]) and the Son of David ([[matthew-01#^matthew-01-1|Mt 1:1]]; [[luke-01#^luke-01-32|Lk 1:32-33]]), hailed by Christians as the Messiah ([[john-01#^john-01-41|Jn 1:41]]). ### Sources [Christ — word study]
