# Coming
## Ignatius Catholic Study Bible
*Coming* ([[matthew-24#^matthew-24-3|Mt 24:3]]) – *Parousia* (Gk.): literally means \"presence\" but can denote \"appearing\" or \"visitation\". The word is used four times in Mt 24 and 20 times in the rest of the NT. It is sometimes used in Greek literature to describe the visitation of a king or high official to a city he has previously conquered. In this sense, it presumes a period of absence before the king\'s return. The Bible uses it in a similar way for the arrival of important people ([[judges-10#^judges-10-18|Jud 10:18]]; [[2-maccabees-08#^2-maccabees-08-12|2 Mac 8:12]]; [[2-corinthians-07#^2-corinthians-07-6|2 Cor 7:6]]; [[philippians-01#^philippians-01-26|Phil 1:26]]). More important, it denotes the coming of Jesus Christ, who brings judgment upon his enemies ([[matthew-24#^matthew-24-37|Mt 24:37, 39]]; [[2-thessalonians-02#^2-thessalonians-02-8|2 Thess 2:8]]) and rescues his faithful disciples ([[1-corinthians-15#^1-corinthians-15-23|1 Cor 15:23]]; [[1-thessalonians-03#^1-thessalonians-03-13|1 Thess 3:13]]; [[1-john-02#^1-john-02-28|1 Jn 2:28]]). The word can refer both to Christ\'s \"visitation\" of destruction upon Jerusalem in A.D. 70 as well as to his Second Advent at the end of time as Judge of the living and the dead (cf. [[acts-of-the-apostles-01#^acts-of-the-apostles-01-11|Acts 1:11]]; [[2-timothy-04#^2-timothy-04-1|2 Tim 4:1]]).
