# Dark Night **Hub.** St John of the Cross's name for the passive purification by which God, working in painful darkness and "pure and naked faith," strips the soul of its attachments and imperfect habits to lead it into union with himself. It unfolds in two nights: the **night of the senses**, which mortifies sensory attachment, and the deeper **night of the spirit**, which purifies the very faculties.
