# Hope ## Catechism of the Catholic Church The theological virtue by which we desire and expect from God both eternal life and the grace we need to attain it ([[3.1.1.7.p66#^ccc-1817|1817]]). ## Ignatius Catholic Study Bible **Hope** Anticipates but does not fully possess what is hoped for: [[romans-08#^romans-08-24|Rom 8:24-25]] Hope of sharing the glory of God: [[romans-05#^romans-05-2|Rom 5:2]] In hope of eternal life: [[titus-01#^titus-01-2|Tit 1:2]] Rejoice in hope: [[romans-12#^romans-12-12|Rom 12:12]] Saved in hope: [[romans-08#^romans-08-24|Rom 8:24]] Theological virtue, along with faith and love: [[1-corinthians-13#^1-corinthians-13-13|1 Cor 13:13]] ### Sources [[index-of-doctrines|Index of Doctrines]] ## The Way of Perfection HOPE. Arises from a living faith concerning what God has kept in store for us in the kingdom of heaven ([[tj-way-ccel-42|42.2]]). Those to whom God gives the kingdom here below have great hope of enjoying perpetually what is here given in sips ([[tj-way-ccel-30|30.6]]). In the effects of the favors granted them by the Lord, they have the greatest hope that the Lord is pleased with them ([[tj-way-ccel-37|37.4]]). The hope of being freed from the sufferings of purgatory by suffering on earth helps one to bear suffering willingly ([[tj-way-ccel-40|40.10]]). God gives much to those who sincerely want to trust in him ([[tj-way-ccel-29|29.3]]). ## Divine Intimacy Meditations - As much as the soul hopes for, so much it obtains: [[63-jesus-calms-the-tempest#Meditation 2|63,2]]; [[249-boundless-hope#Meditation 1|249,1]]; - — in God’s mercy is very pleasing to Him: [[108-humility-and-confidence#Meditation 2|108,2]]; - in spite of our misery, we should trust ourselves to God completely: [[247-the-motive-for-hope#Meditation 2|247,2]]; [[249-boundless-hope#Meditation 1|249,1]], [[249-boundless-hope#Meditation 2|249,2]]; - — in God is not excessive because it is based on His infinite mercy: [[249-boundless-hope#Meditation 1|249,1]]; - the more a soul is dilated by — in God the more it is open to His sanctifying action [[249-boundless-hope#Meditation 1|249,1]]; - in spite of its weakness and misery, the soul hopes to attain union with God: [[359-humble-and-reverent-love#Meditation 2|359,2]]; - our — is based on the Passion of Jesus: [[126-jesus-persecuted#Meditation 1|126,1]]; - we can — for all in the name of Jesus and in His infinite merits: [[175-efficacious-prayer#Meditation 2|175,2]]; - — has a sense of sadness, as we do not yet possess that which we — for: [[161-gods-pilgrims#Meditation 2|161,2]]; - in Heaven — will cease: [[254-the-excellence-of-charity#Meditation 1|254,1]]; - without charity, this virtue is incomplete: [[254-the-excellence-of-charity#Meditation 1|254,1]]; - it is perfected by the gift of knowledge: [[310-blessed-are-they-that-mourn#Meditation 2|310,2]]; - it purifies the memory, emptying it of all things: [[349-toward-complete-purification#Meditation 2|349,2]]; - our — in God is not complete as long as we still trust in creatures: [[178-marys-hope#Meditation 2|178,2]]; - the Holy Eucharist is a motive for great — and confidence: [[204-mystery-of-hope#Meditation 2|204,2]]; - object of — possession of God in Heaven: [[246-hope#Meditation 1|246,1]]; [[299-the-gift-of-fear#Meditation 2|299,2]]; - we should have firm — that God will pardon our sins and give graces necessary for sanctification: [[246-hope#Meditation 1|246,1]], [[246-hope#Meditation 2|246,2]]; - foundation of — is infinite goodness of God, His saving and sanctifying Will [[247-the-motive-for-hope#Meditation 1|247,1]]; - we should not base our — on our merits, on our works or resources, but in God alone: [[247-the-motive-for-hope#Meditation 1|247,1]], [[247-the-motive-for-hope#Meditation 2|247,2]]; [[249-boundless-hope#Meditation 1|249,1]], [[249-boundless-hope#Meditation 2|249,2]]; [[338-apostolic-hope#Meditation 2|338,2]]; - certitude of — based on faith in infinite love of God: [[247-the-motive-for-hope#Meditation 2|247,2]]; - in trials our — becomes more pure, supernatural, and intense: [[247-the-motive-for-hope#Meditation 1|247,1]]; [[248-the-test-of-hope#Meditation 1|248,1]], [[248-the-test-of-hope#Meditation 2|248,2]]; - stability of — measured by trial, desolation, abandonment: [[248-the-test-of-hope#Meditation 1|248,1]]; - least act of — in trial and desolation worth more than a thousand in joy and prosperity: [[248-the-test-of-hope#Meditation 2|248,2]]; - not necessary to have sentiment of —; it suffices to will to —: [[248-the-test-of-hope#Meditation 2|248,2]]; - conduct in trials and temptations against — [[248-the-test-of-hope#Meditation 2|248,2]]; - is the anchor of salvation for the soul tossed by the waves of human weakness [[249-boundless-hope#Meditation 2|249,2]]; - unshakable — in anguish of purifying trials: [[353-desolation-and-darkness#Meditation 1|353,1]]; - temerity to think God will save and sanctify us without our collaboration [[246-hope#Meditation 2|246,2]]; - though God requires good works, God does not wish us to base our confidence in them [[247-the-motive-for-hope#Meditation 1|247,1]]; - Christian — requires good works, though it does not direct us to depend upon them, but upon God and His infinite mercy [[249-boundless-hope#Meditation 2|249,2]]; - firm — necessary for an apostle [[338-apostolic-hope#Meditation 1|338,1]], [[338-apostolic-hope#Meditation 2|338,2]]; - to continue to — in spite of contradiction and failure in the apostolate: [[338-apostolic-hope#Meditation 2|338,2]]. - See: [[confidence|Confidence]]. - [[63-jesus-calms-the-tempest|63.
