# Ministry
## Catechism of the Catholic Church
The service or work of sanctification performed by the preaching of the word and the celebration of the sacraments by those in [[holy-orders|Holy Orders]] ([[1.2.3.9.p2a#^ccc-893|893]], [[2.2.3.6.p4r#^ccc-1536|1536]]), or in determined circumstances, by laity ([[1.2.3.9.p2a#^ccc-903|903]]). The New Testament speaks of a variety of ministries in the Church; Christ himself is the source of ministry in the Church ([[1.2.3.9.p2a#^ccc-873|873]]-[[1.2.3.9.p2a#^ccc-874|874]]). Bishops, priests, and deacons are ordained ministers in the Church ([[2.2.3.6.p4t#^ccc-1548|1548]]).
