# Opus Angelorum Formation Study Group: Meeting Agenda & Facilitator Notes
## Formation Letter 6: The First Characteristic – Fidelity
### **A Note for the Facilitator**
Welcome, and thank you for guiding this month's formation meeting. This document provides a structured framework for your study group's session on Formation Letter 6. It is designed to foster a reverent, prayerful, and fruitful discussion on the foundational virtue of fidelity. Please use this guide to keep the conversation focused on the key teachings presented in the letter, encouraging members to deepen their understanding and live out their commitment to Christ in union with the holy angels.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
### **1. Opening Prayer**
We begin our time together by placing ourselves in the presence of God. Let us quiet our hearts and invoke the Holy Spirit, asking for the grace to be docile and attentive to His will. Through the intercession of the holy angels, may our minds be enlightened and our hearts be prepared to receive the spiritual nourishment offered in this month’s formation.
_All make the Sign of the Cross._
The recommended opening prayer for this month is **Prayer 70, "You Always Stand at My Side, Day and Night."**
**Spiritual Focus:** Let us offer this prayer asking for the grace to grow in the virtue of fidelity. May we, with the help of our Guardian Angels, learn to attune our hearts to the "spiritual wavelength" of our heavenly guides, rooting our lives in a steadfast, persevering love for God, especially in the face of trials.
With our hearts now open to the Lord, let us reflect on His work in our lives over the past month.
### **2. Monthly Reflection: Walking with the Angels**
This portion of our meeting is dedicated to shared reflection. It is an opportunity for members to briefly share personal experiences and insights from the past month, connecting the spiritual teachings of Opus Angelorum to the realities of daily life. This practice builds our community in Christ and encourages mutual support as we walk this path of formation together.
**Facilitator's Prompt:** "Over the past month, as we have continued our formation, where have you noticed the call to be more faithful in your prayer life, your duties, or your relationships? Were there any moments you felt the particular assistance of your Guardian Angel in remaining steadfast?"
Thank you for your sharing. Let us now turn our attention to the specific teachings on the foundational virtue of fidelity.
### **3. Discussion: Key Topics from Formation Letter 6 –** _**Fidelity**_
We will now delve into the core teachings of Formation Letter 6. This letter introduces the first of seven essential characteristics for working with the holy angels: **Fidelity**. Understanding this virtue is crucial, for it was the very basis upon which the angels themselves were divided in their trial. Taken together, these virtues provide the "moral profile" of a member of Opus Angelorum and are the means by which we assimilate ourselves to the angelic life and open ourselves to a deeper collaboration with them for the glory of God.
#### **A. The Seven Characteristics: Attuning to the Angelic Wavelength**
To work effectively with the holy angels, we must first learn to imitate them. The Formation Letter explains that to receive their subtle inspirations—their "angelic messages"—we must cultivate certain inner dispositions. This is likened to tuning a radio to the correct frequency. These seven characteristics help us align ourselves with the "spiritual wavelength" of our heavenly guides. They are:
- Fidelity
- Humility
- Holy Obedience
- Divine Love
- Holy Silence
- Holy Temperance
- The Imitation of Mary
#### **B. Defining Fidelity: More Than Intellectual Assent**
The letter presents a rich definition of fidelity, rooted in the history of the angels and our covenant with God.
- It is the **first basic characteristic** of the holy angels, perfectly demonstrated in their trial by St. Michael's cry, "Who is like God?!" which affirmed their unwavering allegiance.
- Stemming from the Latin root _fides_ (faith), it is a **personal allegiance to God**—a steadfast living out of our covenant relationship with Him.
- It is **not just an intellectual agreement** with doctrine but involves ordering one's entire life and talents to the service of God, as illustrated in the parable of the talents (Mt 25:20-21).
- It is the virtue that makes love true and lasting, as it complements both faith and love by providing the steadfast and persevering commitment needed to live out that love, especially through adversity. As the letter summarizes, **"in concrete terms, love means fidelity."**
#### **C. The Ultimate Model: The Fidelity of God**
Our call to be faithful is a response to the perfect and unwavering fidelity of God Himself. His faithfulness is the bedrock of our hope.
- God is unchanging and **true to His promises**, His covenant, and His own nature. As St. Paul writes, "If we are faithless, He remains faithful—for He cannot deny Himself" (2 Tim 2:13).
- Despite humanity's repeated sinfulness, God remains "merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness" (Ex 34:6-7), always ready to forgive.
- The **Cross of Christ** is the ultimate and most profound revelation of the Father's absolute fidelity to His eternal love for humanity (cf. Jn 3:16).
#### **D. Our Call to Fidelity: Living the Virtue**
We are called to mirror God's fidelity in specific, practical areas of our lives.
1. **Fidelity to God:** This means clinging to God in trust, especially during times of suffering and darkness, after the example of Job.
2. **Fidelity to the Church:** This calls us to love our spiritual Mother, the Church, even with the human faults found within her, and to remain faithful to the Holy Father, our Bishops, and priests.
3. **Fidelity to Prayer:** This requires maintaining a regular and deep prayer life, persevering with our commitments even and especially in times of spiritual dryness.
4. **Fidelity to Our State of Life:** This involves fulfilling the "little things" and daily duties of our family, work, and community with perfection, doing them all for the love of God.
5. **Fidelity to Family and Community:** This requires us to be faithful to those in our "domestic Church"—our family and those closest to us—by bearing one another's burdens (Gal 6:2), being merciful, and forgiving as God has forgiven us.
#### **E. Sins Against Fidelity: Discouragement and Criticism**
The letter highlights two primary temptations that act as obstacles to living a life of fidelity.
- **Discouragement:** This temptation arises when we work for God but fail to see immediate or tangible results. The solution is to remember the wisdom of Blessed Mother Teresa: "We are called upon not to be successful, but to be faithful." Our goal is to please God alone, entrusting the outcome to Him. As Mother Gabriele Bitterlich teaches, _"Fidelity is not a flaming fire, fidelity is a rock, fidelity is static [strength]. Fidelity proves itself in patience, in holding out under trial."_
- **Destructive Criticism:** This fault destroys unity and imitates the devil, who is the "accuser of our brothers" (Rev 12:10). The remedy is to replace critical thoughts with prayer for the other person, seeking to build them up in love. The letter offers a specific, angelic remedy: _"It is good first to pray a few days with the Guardian Angel of the other, that the right word, if any, may be said."_
This exploration of the virtue of fidelity prepares us to apply these teachings more deeply to our own lives through the study questions.

# Answer Key for Formation Letter 6: The First Characteristic - Fidelity
### Introduction
This document serves as an official answer key for the study questions presented in Formation Letter 6 of the Opus Angelorum, which focuses on the foundational virtue of Fidelity. Its purpose is to provide a clear, accurate, and faithful reference for personal study and for the facilitation of formation groups. Each answer has been drawn directly and exclusively from the text of Formation Letter 6 to ensure doctrinal and spiritual consistency for all who engage in this formation.
### Study Questions and Answers
**1. How is our fidelity to God related to our faith in God?**
Answer: Fidelity is intrinsically related to faith, as its name derives from the Latin word for faith, _fides_. Fidelity is the active expression of faith, defined as a personal allegiance to God within the covenant relationship. It complements and completes both faith and love by being the stable, steadfast, and persevering living out of one's commitment to God in daily life, even in the face of adversity.

**2. How can one define fidelity?**
Answer: Fidelity can be defined as:
- A personal allegiance to God.
- The centering of one's life on Him.
- The trustworthy carrying out of His will out of faith and love.
- The stable and persevering living out of a covenant relationship of love, especially through trials and adversity.
As the letter states, this means that "in concrete terms, love means fidelity."

**3. How do we express or live out fidelity to God?**
Answer: We live out fidelity to God in several key ways: through steadfastness in love, particularly during trials, as exemplified by Job; by cultivating a personal friendship with God; and by being faithful to our specific responsibilities. These include fidelity to our Holy Mother the Church, to a regular and persevering prayer life, to the duties of our state of life (including the smallest tasks), and to the members of our own family.

**4. How can we grow in fidelity?**
Answer: Growth in fidelity is contingent upon cultivating a personal friendship and bond with God. Paradoxically, fidelity grows most through challenges of faith and trials, where one is called to cling to God alone, beyond personal comfort or understanding. Furthermore, fidelity to prayer, especially during periods of spiritual dryness, is an absolute prerequisite for any significant spiritual growth.

**5. To whom do we owe fidelity besides God?**
Answer: Besides our primary fidelity to God Himself, we also owe fidelity to:
- Our Holy Mother the Church.
- The specific duties associated with our state in life.
- Those to whom we are especially bound in charity, such as the members of our personal family.

**6. Why should we be faithful even to those leaders in the Church who don't seem to be models of virtue? How is this fidelity to be lived out?**
Answer: We should remain faithful because the Church herself is holy, as Christ her Head is holy. Her leaders’ authority to act as ministers of salvation comes directly from Christ Himself. What Jesus said to His Apostles applies also to their successors: "He who hears you hears Me" (Lk 10:16). This fidelity is lived out not by engaging in criticism, but by choosing to love our spiritual Mother, the Church, and by diligently praying for all her members, including her leaders.

**7. How do we live out fidelity within family life? Please give examples of ways in which we can be faithful.**
Answer: Fidelity in family life is proven by authentically living out our faith in daily interactions with our family members. Concrete examples of this faithfulness include being merciful, bearing one another's burdens in charity (Gal 6:2), and being consistently ready to forgive and forget the shortcomings of those closest to us.

**8. How does destructive criticism undermine fidelity? How can we avoid this fault?**
Answer: Destructive criticism undermines fidelity because it actively destroys unity. It originates from the devil, who is the "accuser of our brothers" and whose primary goal is to divide and destroy relationships. We can avoid this fault by praying for the person we are tempted to criticize, humbly recognizing our own faults and limitations, and making a conscious effort to build one another up in love rather than tear down.
_Source: Formation Letter 6, "Sins against Fidelity - Destructive Criticism"_
**9. How does discouragement weaken the virtue of fidelity? How can we avoid this fault?**
Answer: Discouragement weakens fidelity by tempting us to abandon our promises and stop being true to our commitments, especially when we do not see immediate results or feel God's consoling presence. It can lead us to seek consolation in worldly things. We can avoid this fault by entrusting our concerns entirely to God, consciously choosing to remain true to Him regardless of our feelings, and remembering the principle that we are called "not to be successful, but to be faithful."

**10. How did the angels practice fidelity?**
Answer: The holy angels practiced fidelity during their trial by decisively following the leadership of St. Michael. They rallied to his cry, "Who is like God?!", and clung faithfully to God and His holy will as their rock and refuge. Through this act, they committed themselves irrevocably to the loving service and allegiance to God.

**11. How did the Blessed Mother live out fidelity?**
Answer: The Blessed Mother lived out perfect fidelity by not losing her faith when she witnessed her Son being rejected, abused, and crucified; she remained with Him, suffering and praying, until the very end. Her fidelity was expressed through unwavering loyalty, self-giving, humble service, and constant prayer. Crucially, she offered her immense sufferings for the conversion of all souls, and because she did not condemn us but interceded for us, she became the Mother of all and the Mother of the Church.

**12. Give some examples of fidelity from Scripture.**
Answer: The letter provides several key scriptural examples of fidelity:
- The holy angels, led by St. Michael, in their definitive choice for God.
- The faithful and prudent servant in the parable from Matthew 24:45-47.
- Job, who remained faithful to God amidst immense suffering and loss.
- Abraham, who demonstrated his faith by being willing to sacrifice his beloved son, Isaac (Gen 22).
- The holy mother and her seven sons, who chose martyrdom rather than be unfaithful to God's law (2 Mach 7).
