# Original sin ## Catechism of the Catholic Church The sin by which the first human beings disobeyed the commandment of God, choosing to follow their own will rather than God's will. As a consequence they lost the grace of original holiness, and became subject to the law of death; sin became universally present in the world. Besides the personal sin of Adam and Eve, original sin describes the fallen state of human nature which affects every person born into the world, and from which Christ, the "new Adam," came to redeem us ([[1.2.1.1.p1c#^ccc-396|396]]-[[1.2.1.1.p1c#^ccc-412|412]]). ## Ignatius Catholic Study Bible **Original sin** All human beings affected by the sin of the first man: [[romans-05#^romans-05-12|Rom 5:12-19]] Fallen man's disposition to sin: [[romans-07#^romans-07-13|Rom 7:13-25]] Universality of sin among humanity: [[romans-03#^romans-03-9|Rom 3:9-12, 22-23]] *See also* [[sin]] ### Sources [[index-of-doctrines|Index of Doctrines]] ## Divine Intimacy Meditations - its consequences: [[2-invitation-to-sanctity#Meditation 1|2,1]]; [[26-the-mystery-of-the-incarnation#Meditation 2|26,2]]; [[38-jesus-our-mediator#Meditation 1|38,1]]; [[127-the-value-of-suffering#Meditation 1|127,1]]; - in consequence of original — man has lost the dominion of the spirit over his senses, his flesh: [[92-corporal-mortification#Meditation 1|92,1]]. - [[2-invitation-to-sanctity|2.
