# On the Sacrament of Matrimony
Marriage cannot be contracted by persons within the fourth degree of kindred, without a dispensation, and if attempted, it is invalid. Spiritual kindred, contracted by baptism or confirmation, is an impediment to marriage.
Clandestine marriage is that which is not performed by their own pastor, or by the pastor of one of the party, with certificate, or by another priest with his license, and in the presence of two or three witnesses.
Clandestine marriages are always unlawful, and forbidden by the church; they are likewise null or invalid in all the diocesses of Ireland, as the decree of the Council of Trent, which annuls clandestine marriages, has been duly received in them all.
It is prohibited to solemnize marriage from Ash Wednesday until Easter Sunday;; and from the beginning of Advent until the 7th of January.
