# Penance
## Catechism of the Catholic Church
_Interior_ penance: a conversion of heart toward God and away from sin, which implies the intention to change one's life because of hope in divine mercy ([[2.2.2.4.pp4a#^ccc-1431|1431]]). _External_ acts of penance include fasting, prayer, and [[almsgiving]] ([[2.2.2.4.p4b#^ccc-1434|1434]]). The observance of certain penitential practices is obliged by the fourth precept of the Church ([[3.1.3.3.p75#^ccc-2043|2043]]).
