# Saint Augustine of Hippo
## Biography
Augustine was born at Tagaste in Numidia (present-day Algeria) on 13 November, 354. His mother, Monica, was a devout Christian; his father, Patricius, was pagan. After years of intellectual wandering and a dissolute youth, Augustine was baptized at Milan on Easter Vigil, 387, under the influence of Saint Ambrose. He was ordained priest in 391 and became Bishop of Hippo in 396, a post he held until his death on 28 August, 430. Among the most prolific and influential of the Latin Fathers of the Church, he is renowned for his *Confessions*, *The City of God*, and his profound writings on grace, free will, and the Trinity.
