> [[09-figures|↑ Back to TOC]] # Brother Lawrence of the Resurrection ## Biography Brother Lawrence of the Resurrection, born Nicolas Herman, entered the Discalced Carmelite monastery in Paris around 1640 and served there until his death on February 12, 1691. Born in Lorraine around 1614, he had served as a soldier and then as a footman before entering religious life as a lay brother. He worked for many years in the kitchen, and later as a sandal-maker, believing ordinary tasks to be as sacred as prayer when done in a spirit of continual awareness of God's presence.
