# Ransom ## Ignatius Catholic Study Bible *Ransom* ([[mark-10#^mark-10-45|Mk 10:45]]) _ *Lytron* (Gk.): a \"redemption price\" paid for the release of captives. The word occurs only two times in the NT ([[matthew-20#^matthew-20-28|Mt 20:28]]; [[mark-10#^mark-10-45|Mk 10:45]]) but is related to other biblical concepts with a similar meaning ([[ephesians-01#^ephesians-01-7|Eph 1:7]]; [[1-timothy-02#^1-timothy-02-5|1 Tim 2:5-6]]). In the OT, kinship relations gave rise to the obligation of protecting one\'s parents, brothers, sisters, and cousins. Family members thus took responsibility for paying the ransom price for other family members who were taken captive or sold into slavery ([[leviticus-25#^leviticus-25-47|Lev 25:47-49]]). As a divine Father, God became the \"Redeemer\" of Israel ([[isaiah-41#^isaiah-41-14|Is 41:14]]; [[isaiah-54#^isaiah-54-5|54:5]]), who ransomed his beloved ), who ransomed his beloved ), who ransomed his beloved ), who ransomed his beloved ), who ransomed his beloved ), who ransomed his beloved son from Egypt ([[exodus-04#^exodus-04-22|Ex 4:22-23]]; [[deuteronomy-07#^deuteronomy-07-8|Deut 7:8]]). In the NT, God purchases his people from slavery in sin ([[romans-06#^romans-06-16|Rom 6:16-18]]) by the price of Christ\'s own life ([[1-peter-01#^1-peter-01-18|1 Pet 1:18-19]]). His saving death thus ransomed us for freedom and fellowship in the family of God ([[1-corinthians-06#^1-corinthians-06-20|1 Cor 6:20]]; [[colossians-01#^colossians-01-11|Col 1:11-14]]; [[revelation-05#^revelation-05-9|Rev 5:9]]). ### Sources [[mark-commentary#^j8ofwb|Ransom — word study]]
