# Sacrifice ## Catechism of the Catholic Church A ritual offering made to God by a priest on behalf of the people, as a sign of [[adoration]], gratitude, supplication, and communion ([[3.2.1.1.p7d#^ccc-2099|2099]]). The perfect sacrifice was Christ's death on the cross; by this sacrifice, Christ accomplished our redemption as high priest of the new and eternal covenant ([[1.2.2.4.p1o#^ccc-616|616]]). The sacrifice of Christ on the cross is commemorated and mysteriously made present in the Eucharistic sacrifice of the Church ([[2.2.1.3.p41#^ccc-1357|1357]], [[2.2.3.6.p4t#^ccc-1544|1544]]). ## Ignatius Catholic Study Bible **Sacrifice** Christians are to present themselves as living sacrifices to God: [[romans-12#^romans-12-1|Rom 12:1]] Eucharist is a sacrifice: [[matthew-26#^matthew-26-26|Mt 26:26-29]]; [[mark-14#^mark-14-24|Mk 14:24]]; [[luke-22#^luke-22-19|Lk 22:19-20]]; [[john-06#^john-06-51|Jn 6:51]]; [[1-corinthians-10#^1-corinthians-10-16|1 Cor 10:16-22]]; [[hebrews-13#^hebrews-13-10|Heb 13:10]] Expiation for sin: [[hebrews-09#^hebrews-09-22|Heb 9:22]] Jesus's death was a sacrifice for sins: [[mark-14#^mark-14-22|Mk 14:22-24]]; [[1-corinthians-11#^1-corinthians-11-23|1 Cor 11:23-26]]; [[ephesians-05#^ephesians-05-2|Eph 5:2]]; [[hebrews-07#^hebrews-07-27|Heb 7:27]]; [[hebrews-09#^hebrews-09-26|9:26]]; [[hebrews-10#^hebrews-10-12|10:12]]; [[revelation-05#^revelation-05-6|Rev 5:6, 12]] Obedience is better than physical sacrifices: [[matthew-09#^matthew-09-13|Mt 9:13]]; [[matthew-12#^matthew-12-7|12:7]] Sacrifice of praise: [[hebrews-13#^hebrews-13-15|Heb 13:15]] Spiritual sacrifices: [[1-peter-02#^1-peter-02-5|1 Pet 2:5]] *See also* [[atonement]]; [[eucharist]]; [[reconciliation]]; [[redeemer-redemption|Redemption]]; [[salvation]] ### Sources [[index-of-doctrines|Index of Doctrines]]
