**Spirit**
Angels, good and bad, are spirits: [[matthew-08#^matthew-08-16|Mt 8:16]]; [[matthew-10#^matthew-10-1|10:1]]; [[matthew-12#^matthew-12-43|12:43-5]]; [[mark-01#^mark-01-23|Mk 1:23, 26]]; [[mark-03#^mark-03-11|3:11]]; [[mark-05#^mark-05-13|5:13]]; [[luke-06#^luke-06-18|Lk 6:18]]; [[acts-of-the-apostles-16#^acts-of-the-apostles-16-16|Acts 16:16, 18]]; [[acts-of-the-apostles-19#^acts-of-the-apostles-19-15|19:15]]; [[galatians-04#^galatians-04-3|Gal 4:3]]; [[ephesians-02#^ephesians-02-2|Eph 2:2]]; [[colossians-02#^colossians-02-8|Col 2:8]]; [[hebrews-01#^hebrews-01-14|Heb 1:14]]; [[1-timothy-04#^1-timothy-04-1|1 Tim 4:1]]; [[1-john-04#^1-john-04-1|1 Jn 4:1-3]]; [[revelation-16#^revelation-16-13|Rev 16:13-14]]; [[revelation-18#^revelation-18-2|18:2]]
Attitude or outlook is sometimes referred to as spirit: [[matthew-05#^matthew-05-3|Mt 5:3]]; [[matthew-26#^matthew-26-41|26:41]]; [[luke-01#^luke-01-80|Lk 1:80]]; [[1-corinthians-04#^1-corinthians-04-12|1 Cor 4:12]]; [[2-corinthians-04#^2-corinthians-04-13|2 Cor 4:13]]; [[galatians-06#^galatians-06-1|Gal 6:1]]; [[ephesians-01#^ephesians-01-17|Eph 1:17]]; [[2-thessalonians-02#^2-thessalonians-02-2|2 Thess 2:2]]; [[2-timothy-01#^2-timothy-01-7|2 Tim 1:7]]; [[1-peter-03#^1-peter-03-8|1 Pet 3:8]]
God is Spirit: [[john-04#^john-04-24|Jn 4:24]]; [[1-corinthians-02#^1-corinthians-02-10|1 Cor 2:10]]
"Ghost" is another sense of the term *spirit*: [[luke-24#^luke-24-37|Lk 24:37, 39]]
Deepest aspect of man: [[matthew-27#^matthew-27-50|Mt 27:50]]; [[mark-02#^mark-02-8|Mk 2:8]]; [[mark-08#^mark-08-12|8:12]]; [[john-04#^john-04-24|Jn 4:24]]; [[john-11#^john-11-33|11:33]]; [[acts-of-the-apostles-17#^acts-of-the-apostles-17-16|Acts 17:16]]; [[acts-of-the-apostles-18#^acts-of-the-apostles-18-25|18:25]]; [[romans-01#^romans-01-9|Rom 1:9]]; [[1-corinthians-02#^1-corinthians-02-11|1 Cor 2:11]]; [[1-corinthians-05#^1-corinthians-05-5|5:5]]; [[1-corinthians-06#^1-corinthians-06-17|6:17]]; [[1-corinthians-07#^1-corinthians-07-34|7:34]]; [[1-corinthians-14#^1-corinthians-14-14|14:14-15, 32]]; [[1-corinthians-16#^1-corinthians-16-18|16:18]]; [[philippians-03#^philippians-03-3|Phil 3:3]]; [[philippians-04#^philippians-04-23|4:23]]
Nonmaterial aspect of man: [[luke-08#^luke-08-55|Lk 8:55]]; [[luke-23#^luke-23-46|23:46]]; [[luke-24#^luke-24-37|24:37, 39]]; [[john-19#^john-19-30|Jn 19:30]]; [[acts-of-the-apostles-07#^acts-of-the-apostles-07-59|Acts 7:59]]; [[acts-of-the-apostles-23#^acts-of-the-apostles-23-8|23:8-9]]; [[1-corinthians-07#^1-corinthians-07-34|1 Cor 7:34]]; [[hebrews-12#^hebrews-12-23|Heb 12:23]]
Sometimes soul is distinguished from spirit: [[1-thessalonians-05#^1-thessalonians-05-23|1 Thess 5:23]]; [[hebrews-04#^hebrews-04-12|Heb 4:12]]; [[1-peter-03#^1-peter-03-18|1 Pet 3:18-20]]
Sometimes spirit is used in a sense akin to soul, distinguished from the body: [[matthew-27#^matthew-27-50|Mt 27:50]]; [[luke-08#^luke-08-55|Lk 8:55]]; [[luke-23#^luke-23-46|23:46]]; [[luke-24#^luke-24-37|24:37, 39]]; [[john-19#^john-19-30|Jn 19:30]]; [[acts-of-the-apostles-07#^acts-of-the-apostles-07-59|Acts 7:59]]; [[acts-of-the-apostles-23#^acts-of-the-apostles-23-8|23:8-9]]; [[1-corinthians-07#^1-corinthians-07-34|1 Cor 7:34]]; [[2-corinthians-07#^2-corinthians-07-1|2 Cor 7:1]]; [[hebrews-12#^hebrews-12-23|Heb 12:23]]; [[james-02#^james-02-26|Jas 2:26]]; [[1-peter-03#^1-peter-03-19|1 Pet 3:19]]

## The Interior Castle Study Edition Glossary
In the chapter heading of the first chapter of the seventh dwelling places, Teresa differentiates the spirit from the soul: “Interior things are seen in such a way that one understands with certitude that there is some kind of difference, a difference clearly recognized, between the soul and the spirit, even though they are both one.” She has recourse to the biblical account of Martha and Mary. Martha, the soul, is occupied in living and doing. Mary, the spirit, is totally absorbed by the presence of God and orientated toward transcendence. Also in this context the image of the center reappears. The center of the soul, or the spirit, or the depth, or the very interior part, always coincide with the last dwelling places (the seventh) of the castle. The soul “is called to enter into its center as it is here in this dwelling place” (IC 7.1.5). “In the spiritual marriage, there is still much less remembrance of the body because this secret union takes place in the very interior center of the soul, which must be where God Himself is” (IC 7.2.3). Thus, the depth of the human soul, the spirit, and the relation between soul and spirit has a religious sense.
